Just found your website and have enjoyed reading the comments. I have been manufacturing a product in China for 2 years. I am looking to get costs down on shipping and duties. Have you ever worked with a factory in Mexico or South America? Are duties the same coming from Mexico as they are from China? I am happy with the product quality I am receiving, but I am trying to get a better margin.Thanks.

Hi Brian,

Could you give some examples of websites where you can find pre-screened lists? I need to find trustworthy suppliers with the manufacturing capacity needed for our orders and we are looking into developing countries only at this point. All sorts of products but specifically wood at this time. Not a big fan of alibaba and such. I find the interface a bit overwhelming and the responses few and far between. Just want something simple and to the point with a little more information. Any help would be amazing.

Hi Shannon,
Finding manufacturers is not always easy, but it's also not as hard as it may seem. If you find someone on Alibaba just be sure you do a lot of other research on them... Find out if they have a website outside of alibaba, and do some poking around the internet to see if they come up as a legitimate organization on other business directories etc. I wish there was a silver bullet, but if you do your research, you should be able to find someone trustworthy on an online directory like alibaba or globalsources.

Brian,

I have a prototype that I actually made myself that I have been using for a few years now and have finally decided to try and manufacture it. I was wondering if you could make some suggestions on an overseas textile manufacturer that maybe you have had a good experience with. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Brian,
I have just come across your blog, and as a 19 y.o business owner, i love it.
My passion is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and i operate an e commerce site in which i retail kimonos a.k.a gis which are the uniform for this sport. However, as i am located in Aust and import these products from the U.S, i incur high shipping costs which means my profit margins are low.
For this reason, i a have developed my own brand of kimonos which i will use my website to leverage and hopefully get U.S retailers to retail it.
However, i am having issues finding manufacturers. My suppliers are unwilling to disclose who theirs are and i cant find any which look trust worthy on alibaba and dont know where else to look. Are you able to give me any ideas or suggestions?
